Article history Received: 05-02-2014 Revised: 06-08-2014 Accepted: 05-01-2015 Abstract: Due to our current interest in the study of the relationship between hematological malignancies and oxidative stress, in this review we addressed the recent finding regarding this issue, focusing on the clinical findings concerning the oxidative status of patients diagnosed with hematological cancers. This study is a descriptive review of the literature. For the theoretical scientific background, we used the electronic PubMed search engines. It is possible to find several studies involving oxidative stress and hematological cancer, analyzing the many ways regarding the imbalance of excessive free radical production and its neutralization by antioxidants. The present review highlights the need for studies to understand the main role of oxidative stress as a cause or consequence of hematological neoplasms, as well as its participation as beneficial for either the host or tumor cells.

An Overview of the Epigenetic Modifications of Gene Expression in Tumorigenesis

The five leading causes of cancer-related deaths are lung (1,760,000 deaths), colorectal (862,000 deaths), stomach (783,000 deaths), liver (782,000 deaths), and breast (627,000 deaths) cancers. Epigenetic changes can alter chromatin compaction, leading to the regulation of geneexpression without changing the primary DNA sequence.Epigenetic mechanisms are normally involved incellular processes s...

An Overview on: The Red Blood Cell Histogram

The RBC histogram is an integral part of automated hematology analysis and is now routinely available on all automated cell counters. This histogram and other associated complete blood count (CBC) parameters have been found abnormal in various hematological conditions and may provide major clues in the diagnosis and management of significant red cell disorders. In addition, it is frequently use...

Global methods to monitor the thiol-disulfide state of proteins in vivo.

Cysteines play an important role in protein biochemistry. The unique chemical property and high reactivity of the free thiol group makes reduced cysteine a versatile component of catalytic centers and metal binding sites in many cytosolic proteins and oxidized cystine a stabilizing component in many secreted proteins. Moreover, cysteines readily react with reactive oxygen and nitrogen species t...

α-Lipoic Acid Mitigates Arsenic-Induced Hematological Abnormalities in Adult Male Rats

Background: Arsenic toxicity is a major global health problem and exposure via contaminated drinking water has been associated with hematological and other systemic disorders. The present investigation has been conducted in adult male rats to evaluate the protective ability of α-lipoic acid (ALA) against such hematological disorders. Methods: Twenty-four adult male Wister rats (b.wt.130±10g) wer...

Epigenetic programming contributes to development of drug resistance in hematological malignancies.

Epigenetics is the study of long term and stable but not necessarily heritable alterations in transcriptional potential and gene expression profile of a cell that are not due to any alterations in the DNA sequence. Epigenetic modifications include DNA methylation, posttranslational modifications of histone proteins and expression of small regulatory RNAs. In recent years, the role of epigenetic...
